Song of a Bamboo Forest, a mark-making performance (2026)

The Chinese Immigrant Act of 1881 in New Zealand heavily reduced the number of Chinese passengers through the introduction of a “head toll”. The bamboo, on the other hand, was first brought to New Zealand by British colonial administrator Sir George Grey in the 1800s for its aesthetic appeal. In Song of a Bamboo Forest, the artist contemplates the contrasting historical treatment of the Asiatic subject and the Asiatic object through meditation, movement, and material encounter. Performed by Zed Xu 榛子瞬, photography by Cai Jieying 蔡杰盈.
